The print is a counterproof of an early state of the etching Chair de la paroisse..., which depicts the pulpit sculpted by Simon Challe for the Church of Saint-Roch, Paris. Jean-Baptiste Marduel, the parish priest who commissioned the pulpit in 1752-1758, preaches a sermon from the carved wooden stand.
